Admission Process and Requirements

Total Personal Commitment

It must be the decision of the applicant that he truly wants to attend 1835 House. Those who are only going through the motions to please an employer or family member are not suitable candidates.

1835 House requires total personal commitment.

The applicant must phone in person to make an appointment for an interview.

He is interviewed at 1835 House by a senior counsellor. The counsellor will decide his suitability based on this interview. If accepted, admission forms are completed and the client is assigned the next available bed.

Waiting times vary from a few days to a few weeks.

Clients must be :

18 years of age or older

Ambulatory

Clients must be able to manage stairs and move about under their own locomotion. 1835 House was not designed for wheelchair use. We do not have permanent medical staff on site, nor do we have extra staff to assist client mobility.

Employable

Clients must be employable, for employment is both fundamental and central to the 1835 program. After two weeks all residents must begin an active job search. .

Free of alcohol and drugs for four days

Clients must be completely free of alcohol and drugs for four days prior to an interview, including physician prescribed narcotic painkillers and sleep aids. Physical withdrawal from alcohol and drugs can be severe, including seizures, hallucinations, and tremors. 1835 House is not equipped as a detoxification unit with medical staff. We cannot assume liability for clients suffering extreme reactions, nor risk disrupting the House.

Able to pay room and board, or fee for service in day program.

Committed to follow House guidelines and participate in all aspects of the program.

Free of pending court appearances

Generally, we do not accept into residency men with pending court appearances.

Psychologically Capable

In addition to drug and alcohol addictions, some suffer brain damage or severe psychoses requiring psychiatric treatment. Such conditions are beyond our expertise. Those accepted into the 1835 program must be psychologically capable within normative margins.
